What’s the point of doing good science if you’re not communicating it to others?

Science outreach is essential in encouraging excitement and delivering educational updates in the sciences. Science literacy is more important than ever, and effective communication of the research that we do can greatly increase the general public’s interest, resulting in a more well-informed and knowledgeable society.

Let’s make science more accessible, understandable, and fun.

Let’s Talk Science UTM

Let’s Talk Science (LTS) is an outreach program that connects educators with volunteers to bring meaningful learning experiences to schools and communities. I am a Site Coordinator for LTS at the University of Toronto Mississauga, where I develop learning kits, build and develop a volunteer base, and connect classrooms and community groups with STEM events and workshops.

Given the COVID-19 situation, I am working with three other site coordinators to build and develop kits that are transferrable and accessible in virtual learning and teaching.

If you are an educator interested in our outreach events, fill out an Activity Request Form!

If you are interested in volunteering with us to bring events to classes, get involved here.

UofT Coders

The University of Toronto Coders is study group that shares coding skills and resources via workshops and events to the UofT community, for research, teaching, and personal use. I am the admin on the Executive Council, as well as a contributor. As the admin, I am response for internal communications between the council and members, informing members of events, contacting instructors, and creating event postings for the website. As a contributor, I create, update, and deliver lessons in the form of ~40 minute workshops for various coding skills.

The Carpentries

The Carpentries teaches foundational coding, and data science skills to researchers worldwide. As an certified Instructor, I teach and assist Carpentry workshops to spread data literacy and programmatic skills both locally and globally.

You can request a workshop if you are interested in organizing workshops on data, software, or librarian coding skills. You can also find lesson content here.

Canadian Association for Girls in Science

Canadian Association for Girls in Science (CAGIS) is a science club for girls aged 7 to 16 that facilitates interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). As a Mississauga Chapter Volunteer, I connect with STEM scientists and industry professionals to bring monthly events to young girls. These events are usually hosted at the workplaces of science experts and give the girls a behind-the-scenes view and to facilitate an interest in the sciences.

Past events with CAGIS include coding workshops, plant communities sampling, food and nutrition tours, bird banding, and engineering, building and testing mechanics models.

If you have a younger sister/daughter/cousin/friend/etc. who might be interested in participating in our events, join the club!
